How to Take Care of a Newborn

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of the most exciting moments in a parent’s life. If you’ve recently had a baby, you’ll want to make sure you are doing all you can to support their health and well-being in the early stages of their life. We’re here today to share with you some of our top tips about how to take care of a newborn so that you can enjoy your first months as a parent.

Hygiene with a Newborn

When it comes to looking after a newborn, you need to make sure you are putting safety and hygiene first at all times. Before handling your baby, use soap and water to thoroughly wash your hands. If you are out and about, keep a hand sanitizer with you in case you can’t find a sink in a rush. In the early months of your baby’s life, try to avoid crowded places that may subject your baby to germs their body isn’t yet ready to handle. If your loved ones want to hold your baby, make sure they wash their hands first as well to avoid spreading germs.

Baby-Proof Your Home

If you are welcoming your first child into your home, it’s time to make a full assessment of the safety of your home for a little one. Make sure you cover up sharp edges, secure any cords, and put covers over all of your electrical plugs and outlets. Cleaning products and other chemicals or hazardous liquids should be safely placed out of the way of your baby in a cupboard they can’t reach. Designate a room to be your baby’s nursery so that you have a safe space where you can spend time. Also, consider the décor of this room, which offers them a peaceful space to sleep in their crib.

Feeding Time with Your Baby

Feed your baby as frequently as they need during their early months so that they don’t feel hungry and to give them the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Regardless of whether you are breastfeeding or using formula, make sure you are ready to offer them milk whenever required. Hold your baby close as you feed and talk to them gently to help with your bonding. If you need support with breastfeeding and lactation, speak to a healthcare professional who can help discuss your concerns.

Spend Quality Time with Your Baby

The early weeks of your baby’s life are the best time to start bonding with your little one. Skin-to-skin contact is highly encouraged in the first days and weeks of their life to help soothe your baby. Talk to your baby on a regular basis to help keep them calm. By playing, cuddling, and getting to know one another, you and your little one can start creating a bond that will hopefully last a lifetime.
